Build An AJAX Powered Shopping Cart
welcome to infomix.blogspot.com
The goal of this tutorial is to show you how to build an AJAX powered shopping cart. However, it will not be production ready. The back end requirements vary from site to site far too much to write an effective tutorial. Instead, we are going to focus on the AJAX parts.
The back end code in this tutorial acts as scaffolding for us to build the AJAX functionality, however, it can be built off of to meet your own site's requirements. In the last section, we'll discuss some possible next steps to implementing this in your own websites.
The other thing to note is that this tutorial will not explain all the details. A firm grasp of HTML, CSS, and some basic PHP is expected. By basic I mean variables, arrays, control structures, and basic OOP. Some knowledge of Javascript is a plus. We'll walk through and break down the trickier bits of PHP and Javascript, but will gloss over the basic stuff like CSS styling. Links to documentation and other relevant resources will be sprinkled throughout wherever relevant.
The final thing to note is that the order codes (or product codes) used in this tutorial are completely arbitrary.
The Demo
The demo page shows a few different ways our AJAX shopping cart can function. It should be noted that this is not a production ready shopping cart. Due to variability of the requirements from site to site, this tutorial will only cover building the skeleton while you will have to code in the details for retrieving product names, prices, and other data that might come from a database.

Step 1 - Downloading the scripts
We're going to be using jQuery, the jQuery color animations plugin, and Thickbox. The color plugin extends jQuery to allow us to use jQuery to animate colors and Thickbox lets us create quick and easy modal windows.
Create a directory on your web server for the cart to live in. For this tutorial we'll be using cart/. Substitute cart/ with the directory you are using on your server. Inside the cart/ directory create js/, css/, and images/ folders for storing your Javascript, CSS, and images.
Download the jQuery, color plugin, and Thickbox files and save them into the appropriate folders we just created in the cart/ directory. Make sure you download the uncompressed thickbox.js.
Your folder structure should look something like this. I have renamed some of the files but it should be pretty obvious what each one is.
cart/js/jquery-1.2.6.pack.js
cart/js/jquery.color.js
cart/js/thickbox.js
cart/css/thickbox.css
cart/images/loadingAnimation.gif
cart/images/macFFBgHack.png
Step 2 - Setup Thickbox
Since
our folder structure is a little different from the default Thickbox
one, we're going to need to fix some of the paths referencing
loadingAnimation.gif and macFFBgHack.png.

10 Promising JavaScript Frameworks
welcome to infomix.blogspot.com
Popular JavaScript frameworks/libraries like jQuery, MooTools, Prototype, and YUI (to name a few of the most popular JavaScript frameworks out there) definitely have a solid foothold in the JavaScript framework arena.
But for the more adventurous developers looking for new or alternative frameworks/libraries – there are some excellent frameworks outside the popular ones that’s worth checking out.
It’s always good to consider all of your options before settling on a JavaScript framework that’s right for you and/or your team – and though there’s definitely a lot of compelling reasons to stick to the big names – it won’t hurt you any to at least try the alternatives.
This article showcases 10 alternative and capable JavaScript frameworks/libraries to explore. Links to some of their demos (when available) are included in the entry so that you can see the framework in action.
1. SproutCore
SproutCore distinguishes itself by emphasizing its usage for bringing desktop application functionalities on the web. It’s got a healthy amount of easy-to-follow guides to get you going quickly and its own Google Group for your questions and for interacting with other SproutCore developers.
SproutCore demonstrations: Photos, Sample Controls
2. Spry
Spry is Adobe’s Ajax framework. One of the many distinctive features of Spry is its tight integration with Adobe products (such as Dreamweaver, Flash and AIR). Just like any Adobe product, there’s already a ton of documentation to help you get started with Spry quickly.
Spry demonstrations: Photo Gallery, RSS Reader, Form Validation Widgets
3. JavaScriptMVC
JavaScriptMVC is a featured-packed JavaScript framework. JSMVC applies the Model-View-Controller (MVC) architectural pattern to JavaScript, separating business logic from the presentation layer - resulting in increased modularity and ease-of-modification for either one of the components. It has a built-in automated testing unit (because "JavaScript testing sucks") and even emails you when a user encounters an error.
JavaScriptMVC demonstrations: Error Demo, History Demo, Todo Demo
4. qooxdoo
qooxdoo is an Ajax application framework that uses object-oriented JavaScript. It’s a framework that allows you to build a web application using JavaScript without worrying about HTML, CSS, and the DOM. It’s also a fully-featured graphical user interface toolkit (much like YUI) giving the developer built-in support for keyboard navigation, tabbed interfaces, and drag and drop capabilities - among other components.
Qooxdoo demonstrations: demo browser, Feed Reader
5. midori
midori is a light-weight JavaScript framework. At it’s uncompressed state, it weighs in at only 45 KB (in comparison – jQuery in it’s minified state is 54KB). But just because its light doesn’t mean it’s lacking in complex JavaScript functions – midori offers common functions you’d expect from an JavaScript framework such as cross-browser Ajax functions, the ability to use CSS selectors (as opposed to midori-specific syntax) for matching elements in the DOM, and animated effects.
midori demonstrations: drag and drop, popups, toggle
6. Archetype JavaScript Framework
The Archetype JavaScript Framework is a robust JavaScript framework that shares a lot of things in common with Prototype. Archetype has a dependency management system which initializes needed components for particular web pages(what components and CSS file to load – for example). Archetype also emphasizes code readability and coding best practices by being hard-lined about HTML/CSS/JavaScript separation (i.e. "unobtrusive JavaScript") .
Archetype demonstration: Slidy Presentation
7. June Framework
The June Framework was inspired by the Core library and uses the Module design pattern. For those using MS Visual Studio 2008, you’ll love the documentation that comes with the June Framework because it utilizes Visual Studio’s intellisense format (code hints/auto-completion while you write).
June Framework demonstrations: setOpacity, highlight, getKeyName
8. UIZE
UIZE (pronounced "you eyes") is another JavaScript framework the emphasizes the creation of full-on rich internet applications (RIA) as opposed to basic effects and widgets/components on a web page. It already comes packed with "ready-to-go" widgets such as a date picker, a table sorter, progress bar, and color picker.
UIZE demonstrations: Slideshow With Wipes, Marquee and Image Port
9. SimpleJS
SimpleJS is a simple and lightweight, but feature-packed JavaScript framework with Ajax helper functions and animation effects. It uses a "plugins" system much like jQuery and MooTools to extend the framework. It’s the perfect solution for developers who don’t need much outside of basic Ajax functions and effects.
SimpleJS demonstration: you can view the demos in the left side bar of the website under "Functions".
10. Fleegix.js
Fleegix.js has an excellent "events system" that helps you listen, manipulate, and fire off DOM event (such as mouseover’s, onclick, etc.). It includes a function for serializing JavaScript objects into JSON format (fleegix.jason.serialize) and – because every other JavaScript framework has it – an awesome effects module to help you add rich, animated JavaScript animation onto your web page or web application.

Microsoft Enterprise Library 4.1 – October 2008
welcome to infomix.blogspot.com
Enterprise Library consists of reusable software components that are designed to assist developers with common enterprise development challenges. It includes a collection of application blocks and a set of core features, such as object generation, configuration, and instrumentation mechanisms. This release of the Enterprise Library includes one new application block, the Unity Application Block, which implements a framework that provides object generation and dependency injection capabilities, plus other new features and enhancements.
Different applications have different requirements, and you will not find that every application block is useful in every application that you build. Before using an application block, you should have a good understanding of your application requirements and of the scenarios that the application block is designed to address.
Enterprise Library 4.1 – October 2008 contains the following application blocks:
- Caching Application Block. Developers can use this application block to incorporate a cache in their applications. Pluggable cache providers are supported.
- Cryptography Application Block. Developers can use this application block to incorporate hashing and symmetric encryption in their applications.
- Data Access Application Block. Developers can use this application block to incorporate standard database functionality in their applications.
- Exception Handling Application Block. Developers and policy makers can use this application block to create a consistent strategy for processing exceptions that occur throughout the architectural layers of enterprise applications.
- Logging Application Block. Developers can use this application block to include standard logging functionality in their applications.
- Policy Injection Application Block. Developers can use this application block to implement interception policies that can be used to streamline the implementation of common features, such as logging, caching, exception handling, and validation, across a system.
- Security Application Block. Developers can use this application block to incorporate authorization and security caching functionality in their applications.
- Unity Application Block. Developers can use this application block as a lightweight and extensible dependency injection container with support for constructor, property, and method call injection, as well as instance and type interception (via an extension).
- Validation Application Block. Developers can use this application block to create validation rules for business objects that can be used across different layers of their applications.
Enterprise Library also includes a set of core functions, including configuration, instrumentation, and object creation. These functions are used by all other application blocks.
Common Scenarios
Enterprise Library can be useful in a variety of situations:
- Enterprise Library provides enough functionality to support many common scenarios that enterprise-level applications must address.
- Enterprise Library can serve as the basis for a custom library. You can take advantage of the extensibility points incorporated in each application block and extend the application block by supplying new providers. You can also modify the source code for the existing application blocks to incorporate new functionality. You can also add new application blocks to Enterprise Library. You can either develop extensions for existing application blocks and new application blocks yourself, or you can use extensions and application blocks developed by others.
- Enterprise Library is designed so that its application blocks can function independently of each other. You have to add only the application blocks that your application will use; you do not have to add the entire library.
- Enterprise Library includes the source code and the unit tests for all application blocks. This means you can modify the application blocks to merge into your existing library or you can use parts of the Enterprise Library source code in other application blocks or applications that you build.
- Enterprise Library includes documentation, QuickStart samples, and source code. Hands-on-labs and webcasts are posted as separate downloads on the Enterprise Library Home page. This means that you can use the library as a tool for learning architectural, design, and coding best practices.

Meta Programming System - a brand new concept of programming
welcome to infomix.blogspot.com
JetBrains is anxious to present to the judgment of the development community its new creation — MPS, the Meta Programming System. Meta Programming System is a brand new concept of programming that we've been working on lately.
Why Meta Programming?
In our professional software development, we have focused on finding ways to help developers work more effectively.
Despite the range of programming languages available today, we are still limited by them. It makes sense to extend the existing languages to create more domain-oriented ones, which allow writing programs on a higher level and in a manner that is more natural to each domain.
With an instrument that allows creating language constructs as simple as creating classes or methods is in a conventional language, you can significantly change the way you develop software.
This new style of programming, when you create specialized languages, use them to develop software, and extend them when and how required, is called Language Oriented Programming (LOP).
MPS Story
Meta Programming System started in 2003 as a research project. In 2004, its underlying concepts were described in the Language Oriented Programming article. In 2005, we opened an Early Access Program for MPS. We've been using MPS since 2006 to develop some of our new products. Over these years, we have accumulated a lot of our own experience and gathered valuable feedback from early adopters, and this turned MPS from a research project into a mature product that we want to present to you now. MPS is now released as Beta, with the 1.0 release planned for early 2009.
How does MPS work? »
MPS is a free product with most of its source code available under Apache 2.0 license. Download MPS.

Before you use this keep in mind it is intended for C, not C++. The difference? So far as I can see, the only problem in this program would be that you have to write #include one more time to call conio.h
#include
/*I called the libraries I need. They are like dictionaries that tell the computer the meaning of the words I write. The word getch at the bottom of the code, for example, wouldn't work I didn't tell the program to use use conio.h*/
/*.h means header*/
main (void) { /*If you don't write void in the parenthesis, you'll have to write return 0 at the end of the code in this case.*/
int n=0, sum=0, count=0, square=0
/*I just decided what my variables would be. Don't write my comments in your program. I'll use them to guide you. You may comment in your own program if it's too long or complex*/
/*I set them all in 0 because if I do otherwise and use the variable without first assigning it a value, it will take a random one.*/
printf ("Please tell me how many numbers will you enter");
/*printf will just print what you write between the "" inside the parenthesis*/
scanf ("%d", &n);

Yahoo shows ads in IM chat windows
welcome to infomix.blogspot.com
Yahoo Messenger (Windows | Mac) long has shown ads on its buddy list window, but the Internet pioneer is testing them in the instant-messaging chat windows as well.
The ads are part of a test that began in August and ends in December, Yahoo said in a statement. One example we saw here at CNET shows an ad for MasterCard.
"Ads in Yahoo Messenger will allow us to put even more resources behind developing and delivering valuable free features and services," Yahoo said. "Yahoo Messenger is a free service to our users, and our goal is to provide a useful and relevant experience while ensuring this is a profitable business for Yahoo. Yahoo is inherently an advertising-driven business."
The company wouldn't comment yet on what happens after the test is finished. "Plans will be made when the testing is concluded," the company said.
Yahoo laid off 1,520 employees last week and is in the midst of a review of all its business units to see which should be preserved. The company is under fierce financial pressure that only got worse with the recession and increasingly gloomy forecasts for online advertising.
Google shows ads in Gmail that are selected on the basis of e-mail content, but the Yahoo IM ads aren't selected on the basis of context, Yahoo said.
"The ad shows at most once per day per user and scrolls away" as an IM conversation continues, Yahoo said. "Right now the ads are being tested in versions of Yahoo Messenger 7.0 and above."

Microsoft issuing emergency fix for browser flaw
welcome to infomix.blogspot.com
REDMOND, Wash. (AP) — Microsoft Corp. is taking the unusual step of issuing an emergency fix for a security hole in its Internet Explorer software that has exposed millions of users to having their computers taken over by hackers.
The "zero-day" vulnerability, which came to light last week, allows criminals to take over victims' machines simply by steering them to infected Web sites; users don't have to download anything for their computers to get infected, which makes the flaw in Internet Explorer's programming code so dangerous. Internet Explorer is the world's most widely used Web browser.
Microsoft said it plans to ship a security update, rated "critical," for the browser on Wednesday. People with the Windows Update feature activated on their computers will get the patch automatically.
Thousands of Web sites already have been compromised by criminals looking to exploit the flaw. The bad guys have loaded malicious code onto those sites that automatically infect visitors' machines if they're using Internet Explorer and haven't employed a complicated series of workarounds that Microsoft has suggested.
Microsoft said it has seen attacks targeting the flaw o nly in Internet Explorer 7, the most widely used version, but has cautioned that all other current editions of the browser are vulnerable.
Microsoft rarely issues security fixes for its software outside of its regular monthly updates. The company last did it in October, and a year and half before that.
